The award submission for the Quadram Institute project is on behalf of a team, experienced in offsite manufacture that has delivered an extraordinary strategy, for a very technically challenging project and in doing this has provided a building delivered to programme and budget which has exceeded the client's expectations.Offsite manufacturing has been a part of SES' strategy for over a decade and the business has invested heavily with its own specialist prefabrication facility, Prism based in York. The culture of utilising offsite has been nurtured within the SES teams such that it is now regarded as the norm, not the exception. On the Quadram project, the team not only executed the offsite strategy, they exceeded it and it is this attitude which has been crucial to the success of the project.
To achieve this success, the SES team embraced a true collaboration and 'one-team' ethos led by SES Engineering Services (SES), lead contractor Wates Construction and the end-user client universities and NHS trusts.
From start to finish, the outstanding level of trust, transparency and collaborative decision-making spearheaded by SES - on what was an £18m M&E contract for the business - has not only produced unprecedented project outcomes and savings but also ensured the project met strict programme requirements. With its research and clinical departments set to open their doors in the middle of 2018, this was critical.
SES was responsible for the design from Stage 4b, installation and commissioning of all MEP services across this highly-complex project set to house a variety of specialist laboratories, lecture theatres and offices, and will also feature an NHS endoscopy suite.
In total, it delivered 36 plantroom prefabricated AHU valve arrangements, four plantroom pump skids and 164 pipework and electrical containment modules. In addition, six ductwork risers, four pipework risers and three electrical risers were installed each complete with platforms four floors in height, which resulted in over 8,000 man hours taken from site.
With SES's work already complete, the building is due to be ready for final handover in April 2018, after essential stringent tests, commissioning procedures with high quality control have been conducted. This leaves no room for error and a very significant challenge to programme timescales.
