Project Overview
Newcastle University's brief was to save costs and space, increase quality, and focus on sustainability by installing localised plantrooms in three vertical cores over six to eight floors.
Maximising off-site manufacture with the 18 plantrooms, 185 horizontal multi-service modules on the floorplates, and 845 loose-welded spools, NG Bailey delivered the £58 million new build on the Science Central development in partnership with Bowmer & Kirkland, for the University's Institute for Sustainability and School of Computing Science.
The solutions removed 15,258 labour hours from site, reducing deliveries and congestion, and eliminating hot works on site; improving health and safety.
USB's 12,500sqm. over seven stories houses a 300-seat lecture theatre, 250-seat flat floor teaching space, laboratories, seminar rooms, café, TV studio, a multitude of offices, and meeting and social spaces. It is rated BREEAM Excellent.
The flagship building and surrounding city area will become a 'living laboratory' underpinning research to make urban centres more sustainable for future generations; promoting Newcastle as a city of science across the world.
