Project Overview
The Great Eastern Buildings, ranging from two to four storeys with a total of 14 residential units plus commercial and creative industry space; provides an attractive new build residential development in the London Borough of Hackney. The 593 m3 blocks designed in CLT were constructed in only 28 days. The project demonstrates the
capabilities of offsite construction when used to the overcome logistical challenges on a complex site and delivers a sustainable residential development that meets the Lifetime Homes, HCA, and London Housing Guide criteria.
The Great Eastern Buildings are a two to four storey mixed use development located on a brownfield site in Hackney, East London. The highly sustainable building provides 14 new build residential homes for private sale and shared ownership, in addition to office and retail space. The site was formerly offices for the Great Eastern Railway and sits between the municipal buildings located on Mare St and 3 storey Victorian residential properties forming the Horton Road Conservation Area.
Pre-manufactured CLT panels were used to for the superstructure of the building, providing benefits such as faster construction time, reduced noise pollution, and reduced site waste. Specific sustainability features and an efficient build programme contributed to a more economical build and whilst ensuring lower energy costs for future homeowners.
