Project Overview
The COVID-19 pandemic has seen the NHS deal with a sudden severe strain on its wards and facilities. Fears around how the hospitals would cope came without notice as the country was plunged into a national lockdown.
Permanent emergency wards were urgently needed to meet the health services' growing demand. As a modular construction specialist, Darwin Group were able to respond fast and efficiently to deliver three new wards of the highest quality scaling 4,438 sq. m for NHS Trusts across Britain.
The first of the three new spaces were for the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary in Wigan. The ward accommodation facility, which scales more than 1,156 sq m. was designed, manufactured and constructed in less than 40 days. The modular build provided space for an additional 50 in-patient beds and was split into two separate Nightingale Wards.
A further two hospital wards are also being constructed with completion expected in July 2020. A 1,744 sq. m space at New Cross Hospital in Wolverhampton for The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust. Another 1,538 sq. m space at Barnet Hospital, for Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust, is expected to be delivered by the end of July.
