Project Overview
Leeds Skelton Lake Services is a ‘new concept’ for motorway services providing a healthy, light and airy environment for motorists to rest and recoup. The key design element of the scheme, which has achieved BREEAM ‘Very Good’, is the dynamic, undulating living-roof. Beneath this curvilinear roof form, whilst appearing to be separate from it, sit the Facilities Building complete with RSPB viewing platform and a one-hundred bedroom Ramada hotel.. Internally, the clear span created by the hybrid roof structure results in a large, double height open plan central space, around which are arranged major branded food outlets. The scheme is an exemplar of hybrid steel and timber construction designed, fabricated and installed by B&K Structures. The undulating roof form is achieved by a series of twelve green roof ribbons, each with its own unique geometry. The ribbons are formed of CLT roof cassettes supported by external steel ‘Y’ columns. Installation of the roof ribbons was fast; BKS installed 142 glulam beams with a total of 1,793 lifts of timber cassettes, glulam and structural steelwork components. Construction was split across three phases by BKS who completed in approximately 18 weeks.
