Project Overview
The Weald and Downland Living Museum has been in existence since 1975. Located in Singleton in the South Downs National Park and set within the Grade II* West Dean Park it boasts a unique collection of 50 significant historic vernacular timber framed buildings of considerable importance from across the South East of England, rescued from their original settings spanning a 950-year period.
The Gateway Project comprises a modern new-build visitor centre. Two clustered forms referencing the traditional Downland vernacular create a series of flexible interconnected meeting and learning spaces revealing glimpses of the collection whilst connecting with the adjacent landscape and the park beyond.
The Gateway reflects and transcends some of the qualities of the collection and provide a transitional threshold between the 21st century facilities and the Museums exhibits. The new buildings utilise and combine traditional building materials with modern timber structures, detailing and construction techniques, both sympathetic to and appropriate for their unique setting whilst offering and encouraging places for learning, stimulation, discussion, engagement, contemplation and enjoyment - A Gateway to the Museum - A Place for People.
