Modular a ‘huge opportunity,’ says Barwell

9th September, 2016

Housing and planning minister Gavin Barwell has said that offsite construction offers a ‘huge opportunity’ to deliver homes more quickly.

Barwell, who became housing minister during Theresa May’s cabinet reshuffle in July, made the comments on a visit to  affordable housing developer Pocket’s scheme at the China Walk Estate in Lambeth.

“As housing minister I want to help more people achieve their dream of owning their own home,” he said.

“Using innovative approaches like off-site construction provides a huge opportunity to deliver the homes we need much faster. This development by Pocket is a great example of what can be achieved and I hope more developers will follow their lead.”

Property Week reported in August that the government and the mayor of London are drawing up plans to use modular construction to tackle the housing crisis.
