Lightweight steel frames can be designed in conjunction with Eurocode 3 (EC 3); however this provides much more conservative values than BS 5950, which it superseded. The introduction of EC 3 has led to larger sections being required in structural applications, which in turn has increased manufacturing costs which cannot always be passed onto the end user. EC 3 enables design by testing which can result in value engineering and a much more economic design.
In addition to structural testing, the guide outlines the testing requirements for building performance, including thermal, acoustic, air tightness, water tightness and condensation risk. These tests can be performed both on individual elements in the laboratory, or on a finished module. Laboratory-based test results and proof of performance onsite leads to additional benefits such as quicker sign-off by your preferred insurance body and building control.
