New jobs have been created by a Derbyshire maker of concrete pipes and manholes.

The workers will man a £3 million production plant installed by Ilkeston-based Stanton Bonna. It said the investment was part of an ongoing development plan for the company. The new plant replaces the firm's existing production equipment for precast concrete manhole rings.

The company – which has a permanent workforce of around 160 staff – has hired two new full-time employees specifically to work in the new building, called "The Magic Manhole Plant". It will be officially opened on Friday, December 9 by Erewash MP Maggie Throup.

The Conservative politician said: "It is an honour to have been asked by the directors of Stanton Bonna to open the new Magic Manhole production plant at their Stanton-By-Dale site.

"We are extremely lucky here in Erewash to be the home of some of the country's leading manufacturing and engineering businesses, and this new investment by Stanton Bonna is a show of confidence in both the local economy and local people."

Stanton Bonna said an increase in requirements for products manufactured offsite and the success of an innovative watertight manhole system had led to a need for increased capacity at its Littlewell Lane site.

A company spokesman said: "The new production facility is designed to produce the company's range of small to medium sized manhole rings, in both traditional, and the more innovative, watertight ranges.

"The new plant will also produce street gullies, a new manufacturing addition to the Stanton Bonna range.

"At the centre of this investment was the installation on the Ilkeston site of a new Magic 1501 manhole production machine complete with automated product handling. It was supplied and installed by Austrian company Schlusselbauer during the summer.

"A new building was required to house the new equipment and construction began in November 2015.

"The main production space of the building measures 91 x 26 m and was built by Chesterfield based contractor T.G. Beighton Ltd."

Stanton Bonna is part of the Consolis Group, Europe's largest precast concrete producer, and is a leading UK manufacturer of concrete drainage systems, pressure systems, railway products and specialist precast solutions.

The company manufactures for the water, highways, rail, housing, telecom and power sectors of the construction industry.
