Heathrow Airports £16bn Expansion Plans

16th November, 2017

In October 2016, the government selected a new north-west runway at Heathrow as its preferred scheme for delivering new airport capacity in the south-east.

According to Department for Transport a new runway will increase the number of UK airports connected to Heathrow and safeguard existing domestic routes. Heathrow is the UK’s biggest port by value, accounting for 30% of all non-EU trade, and its expansion will enable even more opportunities for UK businesses to reach new markets.

As reported by The Guardian, the transport secretary - Chris Grayling says; “We are determined to seize that opportunity and having the right infrastructure in place will allow us to build a more global Britain. By backing the north-west runway at Heathrow airport and publishing our proposals, we are sending a clear signal that when we leave the EU, we are open for business.”
Campaigners argue that a third runway will increase traffic pollution from vehicles associated with a bigger airport. The problem of building a new runway to serve London is that the south-east of England is densely populated, and wherever a new runway is built, thousands will be affected.

Heathrow however insists that its plans will meet limits on air quality and noise. Also, the government is fully committed to acknowledging the benefits that a new north-west runway at Heathrow would bring, such as economic growth, boosting jobs and skills, strengthening domestic links.

With the government delivering over £450 billion in major UK infrastructure developments, the Government’s Major Projects Portfolio reflect the priorities for making the UK’s infrastructure fit for the 21st Century. These projects represent a major opportunity for those in construction focused on the infrastructure sector.

Phil Wilbraham - Development Director at Heathrow Airport will be speaking at Explore Offsite Infrastructure - discussing Heathrow’s £16bn expansion plans.

Phil Wilbraham will be joined at Explore Offsite Infrastructure by an outstanding speaker line-up that includes: Joshua Southern, Associate Director - KPMG; John Spittle, UK Representative - Wiehag; Martin Perks, Commercial and Procurement - Highways England; Steve Kaye, Head of Innovation - Anglian Water; Paul Newby- Executive Engineering Services Director - SES Engineering Services, Phil Robinson- Lead, Principal Engineering - Laing O'Rourke.
