An Essex council has given the green light to plans by BPTW for the remaining phases of a scheme to redevelop a rundown 1960s estate in Basildon.

The Craylands Estate was a notorious sink estate in the town but for the past few years has been getting a makeover from Swan Housing Association.

Now renamed Beechwood Village, the local council has given the OK to build nearly 600 new homes and complete regeneration work there which has been ongoing for a decade. Once finished, the scheme will have close to 1,000 new homes.

BPTW and landscape architect Outerspace are responsible for the overall masterplan together with the detailed design for plots in the north and south of the existing site. Pollard Thomas Edwards has been carrying out work on the central and west phases.

All the new homes will be manufactured offsite by Swan’s property development arm, NU living, in a new factory which it will open in Basildon.

Meanwhile, Barking and Dagenham council has given the green light to BPTW’s redevelopment of the former Abbey Sports Centre in Barking town centre.

The east London scheme, which varies in height from two to 13 storeys, has been designed on behalf of developer Lindhill and will feature 150 homes exclusively for private rent along with 3,350sq m of commercial and retail space – including a cinema and office spaces as well as improvements to the public realm.

The apartments will be mainly one and two bed apartments with a small number of three bed apartments. Retail and leisure will be on the ground floor while some commercial space has been earmarked for the first floor.
