BSRIA sponsored the best use of MEP (mechanical electrical plumbing) and POD Technology Award at the recent Offsite Construction Awards which celebrate the best in precision building design and delivery. The winners were: SES Engineering Services (SES) for the GSK Aseptic Manufacturing Facility (Q Block) in Barnard Castle, Durham.
The ceremony was held on Tuesday, March 5,
The Offsite Construction Awards reward outstanding examples of prefabrication and factory-based methods, products, systems and disciplines that increasingly strive to develop a sustainable, streamlined and cost-effective way to deliver a better-built environment.
Offsite manufacture removes much of the construction process from the construction site, leading to far-reaching and vital benefits. Across key sectors of UK construction, the Awards showcase innovation, celebrate best practice and recognise overall expertise in offsite construction. This is achieved through landmark projects, influential people and material and manufacturing excellence in this dynamic arena.
Joe Mazzon, the research engineer at Sustainable Construction Group, BSRIA, said: "I was honoured to have presented the award for the best use of MEP and POD Technology in Offsite Construction. Such accolades are a tremendous opportunity to recognise innovation in both design and construction in the Built Environment. The ultimate aim of the Offsite Awards is to reward companies who push the boundaries of both sustainability and cost efficiency on construction projects.
"SES is a worthy winner and the GSK Aseptic Manufacturing Facility is a state-of-the-art pharmaceutical manufacturing facility with GSK committing £94m to its design and construction. The early appointment of SES ensured that offsite manufacturing principles, prefabrication and BIM could be applied to best effect.
"SES has utilised BIM Level 2 in very effective design and construction process. This, combined with high levels of experience and a very impressive in-house offsite manufacturing facility, Prism, ensured that SES was able to implement a highly efficient M&E solution at the complex and highly regulated GSK facility.
"Indeed: BSRIA supports creative thinking and finding cutting-edge ways to provide both the renovation and restoration in delivery and execution of the built environment."
