Berkeley's modular homes factory gets green light

26th January, 2018

Housebuilder is hoping to produce 1,000 new homes per year from the new facility

Berkeley Group has won planning approval for its new modular housing factory in Ebbsfleet, Kent.

The housebuilder wants to build a 150,000ft2 facility and a 15,500ft2 office building on a 10-acre site in the town of Northfleet.

It will produce finished modules that can be used to build up to 1,000 new homes per year, complete with plumbing, electrics, and internal finishing, including flooring and fittings.

Berkeley’s plans to enter into modular housing manufacturing were revealed by Building in June.

The project is expected to create up to 240 jobs in Ebbsfleet Garden City’s Enterprise Zone.

Tony Pidgley, chairman of Berkeley Group, said: “Given the skill shortages we are facing, speed of production and the impact on labour are vital issues for the future of our industry.

“But the real driver for Berkeley is the quality we can achieve with modular housing. It will help us create fantastic homes for our customers where they can live comfortably in a beautiful setting.

“That is what will really drive demand and create value for our business, as well as build fantastic communities for people in the future.”

The factory will also have 220 car parking spaces and 94 cycle spaces all hidden behind substantial landscaping.
