What do we mean when we talk about defining value? In this latest blog post, Sam Stacey, Chief Executive of Stacx International Ltd, talks to Offsite Hub about his involvement in an ambitious initiative to improve UK construction strategies, and how the Value-Added Toolkit can play a significant role in helping companies to define and increase value.
'Between 2018 and 2022, the UK government worked alongside leaders in the construction industry to research and develop a programme to propagate new ways of constructing, making structures more sustainable, efficient, and of higher quality. We aimed to improve how the industry functions, creating better outcomes for society and the people who live in and use the buildings we produce.
The construction industry has long been obsessed with capital costs. When we look at building structures, inevitably, questions arise around issues such as longevity, cost of maintenance, and impact on the local environment.
The Value-Added Tool kit helps add and define value, giving companies the resources and information to make rapid, informed choices. It offers a step-by-step guide for the whole process, looking at each stream that makes the whole. Different streams develop and refine a unique value profile, risk profile, and helps the client assemble a team of highly motivated individuals and organisations.
We have created something that defines and identifies values from every angle, from procurement to delivery. We have had enormous support from the government, but we need buy-in from the industry. With the value-added toolkit and resources created, we have put ourselves in the best position to move forward.'
Sam Stacey is a construction industry leader and writer on construction innovation. He has a unique perspective and a deep heritage in the built environment, having served on various boards, including the BRE, Construction Innovation Hub, and Active Building Centre.
